Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls

By November 30, 2012August 22nd, 2018

You know that uneasy feeling you get as you trip over something or miss a step?  It can mean anything from a small bruise to a broken bone or worse.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2011 slips, trips and falls were the third leading cause of workplace incidents resulting in an average of 12 days away from work.  That can mean higher workers compensation premiums for NY employers.

Here are a few tips to help NY business owners prevent slips, trips and falls and lower work comp costs:

Institute Good Housekeeping Practices:   A good housekeeping plan has to be routine.  Responsibilities must be assigned and everyone should know what the work area ideally looks like when they are finished.

Install Proper Lighting:  Make sure all work areas and stairwells are well lit.  Keep areas around light switches accessible.

Wear Appropriate Shoes:  The types of soles and heels on shoes must be evaluated for your workplace.  Make sure everyone ties shoe laces and removes snow, rain or dirt before entering.

Avoid Clutter:  Keep all work areas, hallways, and stairwells clear of clutter.  Make sure file cabinets and other storage units have their doors and drawers closed at all times.

Use Mats at Entrances:  Believe it or not, there is a science to what kind of mat is best, how many you need, and how long each needs to be to effectively absorb moisture and remove dirt.
