Why E-Verify?

Why should you use E-verify? E-verify is a internet based system that compares information from employee’s I-9 Form to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration database to confirm employment eligibility. By enrolling in this free service, it will provide your company with fast and accurate online service that is cross referenced with millions of government records.

As an employer you are required to ensure the proper completion of the I-9 form for each person, whether citizen or non-citizen, within 3 days of hire. If your company is audited by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and found to be out of compliance, you may be faced with significant fines up to $7,000 per violation and per I-9 Form.

It is illegal to discriminate against any work-authorized individual in the hiring, discharge, recruitment or employment eligibility verification process. I-9 Forms must be kept separate from personnel files and they must be retained either three years from the date of hire or one year from the date of termination, whichever is later.
